What Does OACRI Do?
A healthier ocean and more resilient climate system can protect livelihoods, strengthen communities, and secure a sustainable future for generations to come. Together, through science, education, and action, we can build a more resilient planet.
Our History
Ocean and Climatic Research Institute was founded in 2022 in response to a growing global need for stronger, more accessible climate education, ocean science, and youth-led environmental action — particularly within Pacific and vulnerable island communities.
It was established with the belief that while the impacts of climate change were accelerating, opportunities for structured environmental education, research collaboration, and youth empowerment remained limited in many regions most affected.
To address this gap, OACRI was created as an internationally led platform rooted in the Pacific, dedicated to advancing sustainability, resilience, and accredited environmental education through research, training, and community engagement.
Since its founding, OACRI has expanded its focus to include climate resilience programs, ocean conservation initiatives, CPD-accredited learning, and youth capacity-building projects, working across communities in the Asia-Pacific and beyond.
Today, OACRI continues to grow as a collaborative hub for climate education and environmental action, connecting science, education, and communities to support a more sustainable and resilient future.
The Story Behind Y4CAP and OACRI
The journey of Y4CAP and OACRI began with a shared vision — empowering young people and communities to become leaders in climate action, ocean protection, resilience, and sustainable development across the Pacific and beyond.
Y4CAP was initially created as a youth-driven platform in July 2020 focused on climate awareness, education, and community engagement. Through workshops, partnerships, awareness campaigns, and grassroots initiatives, it connected young people across communities and inspired meaningful action on climate resilience and environmental sustainability.
As the initiative grew, it became clear that there was a need for a stronger institutional framework that could integrate scientific research, structured education, training, and long-term sustainability programs under one unified system. This led to the evolution and integration of Y4CAP within OACRI.
Through this integration, OACRI strengthened its impact by expanding into:
- Climate and ocean education programs
- Community-based resilience initiatives
- Scientific research and innovation opportunities
- International collaborations and partnerships
- CPD-accredited training and certifications
- Youth leadership and capacity-building programs
This integration represents more than organizational growth — it reflects the evolution of a movement committed to turning knowledge into action and empowering communities through education, science, and collaboration.
Today, the spirit and mission of Y4CAP continue to live within OACRI’s work, projects, and outreach efforts, supporting the next generation of climate leaders across the Pacific and globally.
