Founder’s Story
Ocean and Climatic Research Institute was founded by me, Pallawish Kumar, from a vision to create a stronger platform for youth leadership, climate education, ocean conservation, and community resilience. Coming from the Pacific, I witnessed how climate change directly affects island communities, coastlines, marine ecosystems, and the future of young people. I believed there was a need to show the world that we are not only vulnerable to climate change — we are also leaders, innovators, researchers, and protectors of our environment.
My journey first began with #Y4CAP (Youth 4 Climate Action Project), a youth-led initiative that started locally and gradually gained international recognition through climate advocacy, environmental campaigns, and youth engagement programs. Following my involvement in youth climate forums and MOCK COP initiatives, I wanted to create a movement where young people could actively participate in climate action and sustainability efforts within their own communities.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, #Y4CAP became widely recognized for continuing climate awareness and virtual engagement initiatives when many youth platforms had slowed down. It helped connect young people across regions through online learning, environmental discussions, and collaborative action, becoming known as one of the active youth climate movements during that period.
As #Y4CAP expanded, I realized there was a growing need for a more structured institution that could combine grassroots activism with scientific research, professional education, and long-term sustainability programs. This led to the establishment of OACRI as an umbrella organization integrating climate science, ocean education, certifications, research, and youth empowerment under one collaborative framework.
I built OACRI on the belief that young people are not just participants in climate conversations — we are protectors of our oceans, communities, and future. Through OACRI, I wanted to ensure that youth, especially from island and underrepresented communities, had access to free and scholarship-supported education in climate change, resilience, marine science, and environmental sustainability.
Today, OACRI continues to grow as a platform for research, education, and climate resilience, while the spirit and legacy of #Y4CAP remain deeply embedded within its mission. #Y4CAP continues to be remembered as a youth movement that started locally, gained international recognition, and helped inspire a generation of young climate advocates during a critical moment in global history.
