In 2022, in collaboration with Fiji Ministry of Fisheries Officer Mr. Volau Titiko, and OACRI Director Pallawish Kumar constructed and deployed a new Youth Project, "Coral Nursery," in Daliconi Marine Park at Daliconi Village. Youth from Daliconi Village, along with Australian visitors from the yacht, were all hands on deck for the demanding operation, and the Coral Nursery was set up within three hours, with 600 corals planted.
Establishing nurseries to encourage and stimulate the growth of corals is one of the solutions to revive and conserve reefs that have been badly damaged due to excessive dynamite and cyanide fishing. With the right number of coral fragments and proper protection, damaged reefs can recover over time. A healthy reef would mean more sustenance and livelihood for coastal communities.
Keep following us for more updates about the other two Youth Projects on Coral Nurseries, which will be posted soon from Vanuabalavu.
